Here's something you probably didn't expect to hear a few weeks ago: Scott Kazmir will open the season in a Major League rotation.
The Indians announced the left-hander will be their fifth starter when the 2013 campaign begins next week.
Kazmir, 29, did not pitch in MLB at all last season and only managed one start in 2011 before dealing with a back injury and being released. He showcased himself in an independent league this winter before hooking on with the Tribe.
Kazmir allowed five runs in 13 innings this spring, impressively walking just one against 13 strikeouts.
Before his disastrous stint with the Angels, Kazmir went 55-44 with a 114 ERA+ in parts of six years with the (Devil) Rays. He was a two-time All-Star with Tampa Bay and led the AL in strikeouts ...

Cavaliers acquire Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, and guard Josh Selby

    Written by Brain Windhorst, ESPN.com

The Memphis Grizzlies have completed a multiplayer trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, slicing more than $6 million off their payroll to get under the luxury tax threshold.

Memphis sent big man Marreese Speights, guard Wayne Ellington, guard Josh Selby and a future first-round draft pick to the Cavs for forward Jon Leuer.

The pick is the most valuable part of the deal for the Cavs. In 2015 or 2016, if the Grizzlies' first-rounder falls between picks 6-14, the pick goes to the Cavs. Starting in 2017, if the Grizzlies pick falls outside the top five, the Cavs then get the selection. In 2019, the pick becomes unprotected. It is the sixth first-round pick the Cavs have traded for since 2010. ...

    Cavaliers waive guard, Baron Davis

    Written by Marc Stein, ESPN.com

The Cleveland Cavaliers have decided to waive Baron Davis through the league's amnesty clause.

The Cavaliers announced Wednesday night that they're releasing Davis in advance of Friday's amnesty deadline after exploring both trade and buyout possibilities with the former All-Star.

Rougly $27 million of the nearly $30 million left on Davis' contract is guaranteed. The Cavs would still have to pay Davis all that money if they send him away, but the amnesty clause in the new labor agreement -- unlike the 2005 version -- give teams salary cap relief as well as tax relief on a player released via amnesty.

"We would like to thank Baron for his contributions to the team during his time in Cleveland," general manager Chris Grant said in a statement. "He has been an absolute ...

Newest Indian Cord Phelps will be part of a platoon at second base with struggling veteran Orlando Cabrera -- at least for the time being.
Phelps, a switch-hitter, was promoted from Class AAA Columbus on Tuesday night and officially joined the Tribe on Wednesday. He makes his major-league debut at second base and bats seventh against the Twins and right-hander Carl Pavano.
Phelps also can play third and short, but he was drafted as a second baseman in the third round out of Stanford in 2008."The kid's going to get an opportunity to play, and we're going to have to see if he'll take advantage of it,'' Indians manager Manny Acta said. "For now, he's going to play second base, and we're going to give him the opportunity to play the majority of times against right-handed pitching. ...

Already owners of the No. 1 pick in the draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to sweeten their position by securing the second pick as well, according to league sources.

The Cavaliers are in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons about a three-team trade that would give Cleveland the top two picks of next month's NBA draft.
The Cavaliers would use the picks to select Duke point guard Kyrie Irving and Arizona forward Derrick Williams, the sources said.

In the trade being discussed, Cleveland would absorb Detroit's Richard Hamilton into the $14.6 million trade exception it received in last summer's LeBron James sign-and-trade with Miami, while also receiving the Pistons' No. 8 pick. The Cavaliers would then send that pick, ...
