Cool-Shooting Cavs Fall in Third Game in Three Nights

    Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com

On Sunday, the Cavaliers were playing their third game in three nights – and it showed.

Already shorthanded without Kyrie Irving, Anderson Varejao and Daniel Gibson, the Wine and Gold – playing through their toughest stretch of the season – fell behind early and never caught up. Orlando led wire-to-wire, running away with the 100-84 win on Sunday at The Q.

The Magic themselves were without Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu, but they still managed to hold the Cavaliers to 37 percent shooting – including Cleveland’s worst offensive half of basketball this season – while clinching a playoff berth with the win.

The Cavaliers scored just 15 points in each of the first two quarters and went into intermission down a baker’s dozen. They cut Orlando’s lead to eight early in the third period, but the Magic ...

    Shorthanded Cavaliers Drop Seventh Straight

    Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com

The shorthanded Cavs had the Knicks – and the end of their losing streak – in striking distance with just over five minutes to play. But Cleveland couldn’t close the deal.

The Wine and Gold – minus rookie guard Kyrie Irving, a late scratch – pulled to within four, 76-72, on Samardo Samuels’ layup with 5:19 to play. But the Knicks, battling injury issues of their own, closed the game on 15-3 run – handing the Cavaliers the 91-75 loss, their seventh straight.

The Cavaliers were without Irving, who dressed but didn’t see action due to a sprained right shoulder he suffered on Friday night against Milwaukee. The Knicks, already dealing with the loss of Amare Stoudemire, learned on Saturday that Jeremy Lin suffered a meniscus tear in his left knee and will be out around six weeks.

    Irving ...

Phoenix' Fast Start Sends Cavs to Third Straight Loss

    Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com

Last season, the Cavaliers suffered through a Sunday funk – going 0-12 in games wrapping up the weekend. This year, they’ve successfully avoided that trend – until Sunday’s matchup against Phoenix.

Phoenix scored the first 12 points of the ballgame, and that set the tone for the afternoon, with the Suns going wire-to-wire over a flat Cavaliers team – handing Cleveland its third straight loss, 108-83.

Early in the second quarter, the Wine and Gold cut the Suns’ edge to two – 33-31. But Phoenix would close out the half on a 26-7 run and took a 59-38 lead into intermission.

The Cavaliers never regrouped after halftime. They didn’t get closer than 15 in the third quarter and cut Phoenix’ lead to under 20 just once in the fourth. The Suns led by as many as 28 in the final period.

    “We’re just not ...

Johnson leads Hawks past Cavaliers, 103-87

    Written by NBA.com

CLEVELAND (AP) The Atlanta Hawks limped into their game Sunday dogged by injuries and illness.

Joe Johnson made sure everyone felt better.

Johnson, despite playing out of position because of Atlanta's short roster, scored 28 points and the Hawks rolled to a 103-87 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Atlanta had only 10 players available, but took an early lead that it never relinquished. The Hawks shot 55 percent in the first quarter, with Johnson scoring 13 points.

"It was very important for us to get off to a good start and sustain it (because of the injuries), especially on the road," Johnson said. "I just tried to take what the defense gave me."

Alonzo Gee matched a career high with 20 points to lead Cleveland, which has lost three straight. Rookie Kyrie Irving scored 19 points and had 10 assists for his first career double-double.

Cavaliers approach deadline with multiple options

Written by Russell Williams, Cavs 24/7 staff

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The NBA trading deadline is quickly approaching, and with roughly 30 hours remaining before the deadline expires, the rumors and activity around the league are continuing to grow rapidly throughout the final hours.

For the Cavaliers it seems like they will likely one of the most active teams in the remaining time, and according to an eastern conference source - the Cavaliers will be attempting to try an acquire as many first round draft choices for the upcoming NBA draft as possible, to pair with their own first rounder of course.

The Cavs have had ongoing discussions throughout the week with the Los Angeles Lakers regarding a trade with current Cavs backup point guard Ramon Sessions. Sessions, who has averaged 10 points, 3 rebounds, and ...

    Slow Second Quarter Sinks Cleveland

    Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com

“Like I said before, certain teams just have your number,” lamented Coach Byron Scott. “I guess they have our number.”

As they’ve done in both previous meetings, the Toronto Raptors continued to confound the Wine and Gold. Only this time, the loss snapped the Cavaliers’ three-game win streak and kept them away from the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

On Tuesday night, a sluggish second quarter spelled defeat in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers played the Raptors even in all other periods, but Toronto used a 33-24 quarter to take a 54-46 edge into intermission. The Wine and Gold made a moderate push, cutting a 13-point advantage to just six with four minutes to play. But they couldn’t get the stops when they needed them and fell, 96-88, on Tuesday night at The Q.

“In the first quarter, we forced ...

    Cavaliers: Tristan Thompson’s productivity increasing

    Written by Bob Finnan, News-Herald.com

In Cavaliers coach Byron Scott’s opinion, Tristan Thompson should concentrate on one thing when checking into games: “Attacking the glass.”

For the most part, the rookie forward/center has done that, especially in the last eight games.

The 6-foot-9, 227-pounder is not a finished product. He has a lot of maturing to do on the court. But one has to remember we’re dealing with a player who spent one year in college and won’t turn 21 until March 13.

Heading into Monday’s game against the Utah Jazz, he has 29 NBA games under his belt. He could be a sophomore at the University of Texas leading the Big 12 in blocked shots.

Instead, he’s playing at the highest level of basketball and getting a baptism by fire.

In the last week, Thompson has more than held his own against All-Star-caliber big men including Boston’s Kevin Garnett, New York’s Amar’e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler and Chicago’s Joakim Noah. That ...
