CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns' No. 1 pick Myles Garrett returns from injury today to make his long awaited debut against the New York Jets at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Coach Hugh Jackson tempered enthusiasm for his return by announcing Garrett would be on a pitch count and not to expect him to be the savior of the Browns' season.

On the other hand, Jackson is anxious to see how much of an impact Garrett will have in his first regular season game. After missing six weeks with a high-ankle sprain, Jackson understandably doesn't want Garrett to feel pressured into doing too much.

Here's hoping Garrett gets his first official sack and generally makes Jets' quarterback Josh McCown's return to Cleveland uncomfortable.

Cleveland Browns Pregame Scribbles: Josh McCown's theory, Isaiah Crowell's complaints -- Terry Pluto

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns scribbles as they prepare to face the New York Jets:

    1. The Browns face quarterback Josh McCown this week. He is 2-2 as a starter with the Jets, who were supposed to be the worst team in the NFL -- even worse than the Browns, according to several experts.

    2. McCown's two wins as a starter in 2017 equals his combined total from 2014-16. That covered three seasons and 22 starts. His record in that span was 2-20. He was 1-10 in Tampa Bay, 1-10 with the Browns. Both teams had very underwhelming rosters when McCown was there.

    3. McCown said the Browns have to stick with coach Hue Jackson, no matter how ugly it gets this season. McCown likes Jackson. The 38-year-old quarterback is on his eighth team. He's just talking about common sense. He has been through almost constant coaching changes and changes to offenses in his career.

    4. McCown said, "Growth typically happens between Year 1 and Year 2, then Year 2 to Year 3." That assumes the basics stay the same. As for the Browns, McCown said they need to say, "This is what we are going to do and we are going to see it through."

    5. McCown talked to the Cleveland media on a Wednesday conference call. He is training himself to become a coach. He looks at the big picture. He said another problem would be if you change coaches after the season but still want DeShone Kizer to be your starting quarterback: "When you change the system you are right back to square one" with a young quarterback.

    6. Suppose the Browns had kept McCown. Maybe they would be a little better. He probably would have helped Kizer. But I do think he probably would have been injured ... again. As I wrote in my weekend Browns notes, the team has been so bad for years and it's hard to judge almost any quarterback in an orange helmet. In the meantime, Deshaun Watson (Houston) and Carson Wentz (Philadelphia) went to teams that had been at least a combined .500 over the last three seasons before their rookie years.

    7. Kenny Britt (hamstring) is not expected to play. So the Browns will put together a receiver crew from this group: Rashard Higgins, Ricardo Louis, Sammie Coates, Kasen Williams and newly signed Bryce Teggs. Of those five, only two (Higgins and Louis) were with the team in training camp.

    8. I watch the Browns and keep thinking, "Is the quarterback that bad because of the receivers? Are the receivers that bad because of the quarterback? Or are all of them pretty lousy?" That's not a cheap shot. Those are questions Browns talent evaluators have to ask when viewing the passing game this season.

    9. One of the reasons for Isaiah Crowell struggling as a runner supposedly is because he's being used out of the shotgun formation. He would be better off taking handoffs from a quarterback who receives the snap from directly under center. That sounds good, only the facts are different.

    10. This season, Crowell has run the ball 24 times from the shotgun for a 2.8 yard average. Under center? It's 21 times for a 3.0 average. So it's nearly a 50/50 split with little difference in production. These stats are from profootballreference.com.

    11. What about last season? Crowell ran the ball 79 times in the shotgun for a 6.0 average. Under center? It was 119 times for a 4.0 average. So Crowell has carried the ball a lot from the shotgun position and done well, at least in 2016.

    12. Crowell is averaging 11.5 carries this season, a 2.9 average. Last year, it was 12.5 carries for a 4.8 average. While he wants the ball more, he has not been seeing it that much less than a year ago.

    13. Duke Johnson has 10 carries for 57 yards, a 5.7 average. A case can be made if anyone in an orange helmet should run the ball more, it's Johnson -- not Crowell.

    14. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will have Myles Garrett available for the first time in the regular season. McCown fumbles a lot after he's hit. He has six fumbles in four games this season. In the 13 games he played for the Browns, McCown fumbled 16 times.

    15. Last season, the Browns defense recovered only one fumble in 16 games. That's right, ONE! This season, they have THREE in four games. So that's an improvement.

    16. Prediction: Browns 15, Jets 13. Don't ask me why. As I wrote, it's probably because I don't want to think about the Browns being 0-5 and all the emails to follow. Besides, I'm in New York covering the Tribe today, so maybe me not being there will inspire the Browns.

And, those two (Higgins & Louis) would be lucky if they made the practice squad of most other teams at the time they were drafted. Worst selection of WRs in one draft I've ever seen in my years following Browns. jmho I did like these two of the four as having the best chance of developing in time, though but not as starters. Where's Paul Brown when you need him the most!

List of Browns inactives - will be very interesting to see if the offense improves with Britt sidelined today.

Our offense is fucking unwatchable. Kizer ran for a 1 yard gain when his pocket was perfect.

Treggs with the big catch. Good start kid.
