If this young man can become the player a lot envision................besides improving our DL as either a starter or top rotational guy; this pick should improve our draft grade by a least a half point or point. jmho

Breakdown of Myles Garrett 4 year rookie contract:

Total Contract Value; $30.4 million over 4 years - FULLY GUARANTEED.

$20.25 Signing Bonus (that's cash in Myles Garrett's bank account TODAY).
That leaves $10.15 million over 4 years - aka $2.5M per season

    The man just got paid.

And while that seems like jaw-dropping numbers, especially since it is all guaranteed, two points:

    - He's the number one pick in the draft. Thus he will get paid the highest, at least in guaranteed money. Trubisky's contract may have more conditional money in it.

    - Osweiler makes more in two years than Garrett's whole contract. Ponder that.

At any rate, I love these rookie slotting contracts. Has made holding out obsolete.

I remember years ago on my old forum there were a group of us was questioning how ridiculous it was giving these draftees all that $$$$ when they hadn't played a down yet in the NFL.

Yeah that was crazy. It was great that the league & the NFLPA were able to come to an agreement about rookie contracts & 'slotting' how much a pick will get based on where they were drafted. And once Sam Bradford retires, he will be the last player to benefit from the old system.

Come to think of he probably was the poster boy for changing the system, lol.

They still get crazy amounts.....but nothing like it would be if they wouldn't have changed the system.....not to mention you don't have all the bad blood and hold outs like Zip pointed out.

The current system is at least logical. You get drafted & based on when, here's the offer, based on the same salary the guy drafted at that position last year got plus a little bump up. You will become a wealthy young man. Now you got four years to either make it in this league or not, and if you do, your next contract will reflect how well you did under your rookie contract. So it's merit-based & you don't have rookies making more than 10-year vets.

Certainly we can debate whether they're worth what they're paid, but that's a separate issue. But at least they took an illogical system & standardized it.

Both parties (Agent/Player & Owner) could work to improve it even more by adding in incentive and accelerating bonuses to a certain cap figure during the rookie's first contract years. Like you got to attain the goal before you're paid the bonus and/or salary.......you gotta earn the old fashion way as they use to say. And, in regards do they earn their salary, remember its a short duration and the following retirement years are sometimes plagued with some serious injuries. To name one....the concussion issue and all the surgeries these guys go through in their short careers.....these are the guys that really earn it. jmho

And I'll go one step further, and I'm assuming this isn't done, but I would require all NFL players to defer at least 25% of their salary, placed into an account that they can't touch until they retire. They may bitch about it when they're 23, but they will be thankful when they're 33.
