Irving's Huge Fourth Not Enough at The Q

Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com staff

If one just checked Friday night’s boxscore, it’d be hard to imagine the Cavaliers losing.

They dominated New Jersey in the paint, on the boards and on the fastbreak. They out-shot the Nets from the floor, had 10 more rebounds, just two more turnovers and Cleveland’s young star finished with a career-high 32 points.

But the game isn’t played in the boxscore, and in the actual matchup, the Cavaliers were primarily listless for the first three-and-a-half quarters before rallying in the final seven minutes. By then, it was a case of too little, too late as the Wine and Gold fell to the Nets, 99-96, on Friday night at The Q.

The Cavaliers never led on Friday night and, midway through the fourth quarter, found themselves down by 17 points.

At that point, sensational rookie Kyrie ...

Varejao Leads Total Team Effort, Cavs End Skein at Four

    Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com

The Knicks can leave Cleveland taking comfort in one thing: They only have one more game remaining on the North Coast this season.

New York hadn’t topped the Cavaliers in Cleveland since Kyrie Irving was in grade school. And Anderson Varejao made sure that trend continued on Wednesday night at The Q – leading the way in the Wine and Gold’s convincing 91-81 win over Mike D’Antoni’s struggling squad.

Varejao not only stuffed the stat sheet, he set the tone for the Cavaliers and provided a stark contrast to a flat Knicks club.

The Wild Thing doubled-up with 10 points and a season-high 16 boards – including eight off the offensive glass – adding four assists, a game-high four steals and both of the Cavaliers’ blocked shots. He did his usual grunt work below the rim, but also turned in some aerial acrobatics – throwing down a massive dunk with ...

Got a question to ask the staff here at Cavs 24/7 about the Cavaliers, or the NBA? Shoot us an email at RussellWilliams23@att.blackberry.net with your question, name, and city/state to get your question answered and posted weekly here at Cavs247.com.

Dave, Conneaut, OH: What position is the most critical for the Cavs to upgrade to be able to take the next step toward being a legitimate contender?

Cavs 24/7: I believe in past history success. Most, if not all the championship winners have had good scoring big men. Dallas had Dirk Nowitzki last year, the Heat and Lakers had Shaquille O'Neal during both of their runs, and the Lakers also had Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum in their other championship runs. The Chicago Bulls had Micheal Jordan and Scottie Pippen, a rare duo you ever see in the league nowadays ...

Bulls 114, Cavaliers 75: Bulls run down Cavaliers

    Written by Bob Finnan, News-Herald.com

Cavaliers coach Byron Scott's worst fears were realized.

He was a bit apprehensive about how his team would react to the news that Derrick Rose wasn't playing on Friday.

Scott was worried that there would be a letdown by the Cavs with the reigning Most Valuable Player sidelined with a toe injury.

Playing without perhaps the best point guard in the league, the Bulls toyed with the Cavs on Friday, 114-75, before 17,871 at Quicken Loans Arena. It represented the most lopsided loss at home in franchise history.

"If they continue to play with the same lack of intensity, many more are on the way. That was probably the worst game we've played all season," Scott said. "Chicago was aggressive and physical. The more they hit, the more we took steps back. We didn't react to their physical play, besides the whining.

"We cannot let a good team come in and play ...

Warriors 105, Cavaliers 95: Cavs' ‘carelessness' wasn't because of fatigue

    Written by Bob Finnan, news-herald.com

The Golden State Warriors weren't the Cavaliers' only obstacle on Tuesday.

They also had to battle mental fatigue.

The Cavs are 0-3 on the tail end of a back-to-back set this season.

So, instead of canceling the shootaround on Tuesday morning to save his team's legs, Coach Byron Scott summoned his troops to Cleveland Clinic Courts.

Teams customarily forego shootarounds during a back-to-back. Scott's ploy might have backfired, thanks to the Cavs' 105-95 setback Tuesday to the Warriors before 13,056 at Quicken Loans Arena.

After playing in Charlotte, N.C., on Monday, the Cavaliers didn't seem to have the required stamina on Tuesday.

Things get considerably tougher for the Cavs (6-7), who face Eastern Conference powers Chicago, Atlanta, Miami and the New York Knicks in their next four games.

    That's why Tuesday's game was somewhat ...

Kobe's 42 Enough to Ward Off Wine and Gold's Late Run

Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com Beat Writer

When the Wine and Gold came to Staples Center last season, the Lakers seemed to blow past the Cavaliers as soon as the ball went up at center court. On Friday night, they couldn’t shake Cleveland for four quarters.

Eventually, Kobe Bryant – who’s now notched 40-plus points in each of his last three games – took over. But until those closing moments, Byron Scott’s squad put a good scare into the LakeShow, falling 97-92 in Tinseltown.

L.A.’s Matt Barnes scored on a layup early in the third quarter to make it 65-46 and it looked like the Cavs were in for another road blowout at the hands of the Lakers. But after chipping away through the third, Ramon Sessions keyed a 9-0 run to start the final period and Cleveland found itself down just three, 82-79, with just over seven minutes to play.

But the white-hot Bryant bounced back, canning a pair of 18-footers to keep the Cavaliers at ...

Miscues Allow Portland to Pull Away

Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com Beat Writer

Topping the Trail Blazers in Portland is a tall order on any night. Topping them while committing 24 turnovers is close to mission impossible.

After a tight first half, the Blazers staved off the Wine and Gold’s run in the second and pulled away down the stretch – handing Cleveland the 98-78 loss at the Rose Garden.

Kyrie Irving’s 21 points led just three Cavaliers in double-figures and Cleveland shot just 37 from the field. The Blazers, meanwhile, got a combined 52 points from LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews.

The Cavaliers were within striking distance in the second quarter, but Matthews canned a three-pointer to close the first half, putting Portland up seven. In the third period, the Blazers opened up a 10-point edge before Irving keyed a run that got Cleveland to within four, 57-53.

    But the Blazers ...

Rough Start to Trip in T-Dot

Written by Joe Gabriele, Cavs.com Beat Writer

Following Wednesday’s loss to the Raptors, the sentiment in Cleveland’s locker room was universal: Talking about playing in a back-to-back is one thing. Actually playing in it is another.

The Cavaliers, played on consecutive nights for the first time in this condensed season, and it showed, as the Raptors rolled over a weary-looking Wine and Gold squad, 92-77, on Wednesday night at the Air Canada Centre.

After opening an early lead, the Cavaliers fell behind after one quarter, 21-18, and never recovered. The Raptors eventually opened their lead to as many as 20 points and went on to hand Cleveland two of its first three losses.

Antawn Jamison scored 17 of his team-leading 19 points in the first half – one of just three Cavaliers to notch double-figures in Wednesday’s rematch. Kyrie Irving followed up with a dozen points, but shot just 3-for-13 from the floor.

    In ...

This is just my opinion of the top 5 players at every position in the up coming NFL draft. This isn't involving players who have said they won't enter, but does include draft eligible juniors and RS sophomores who have not mentioned their intent.

    Quarterback-
    1. Andrew Luck Stanford - Great prospect. Big arm, accurate arm, great size and smart player.
    2. Robert Griffin III Baylor - Awesome potential. Smart, accurate, athletic and has a great ability to take over an offense.
    3. Brandon Weeden Oklahoma State - If he wasn't 27 years old he would be a first round prospect for sure. Great size, arm and decision making.
    4. Ryan Tannehill Texas A&M - Athletic quarterback who makes very smart plays. I need ...
